Summer Music Camp
Programs
Large Ensembles
Luzerne's 75-Member Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra and Brass Choir rehearse
daily to prepare for the concerts held on Sunday afternoons at
the camp.
The conductors emphasize the importance of listening
for intonation, tone quality, dynamics, articulation and
rhythmic precision in preparing for their performances. Seating
in key positions in all ensembles is reviewed weekly and
assigned on a rotational basis in order to share the experience.
Sectional rehearsal and master classes by visiting artists who
share their special insights into the preparation of a precision
ensemble are an important part of the large ensemble program at
Luzerne.
Chamber Music
Chamber Music is at the heart of the Luzerne training
experience.
As a part of the STRING, WOODWIND, BRASS,
PERCUSSION and PIANO programs, chamber groups are formed
to study repertoire appropriate for their level. They are
coached in daily rehearsals and are selected each week for
the Saturday evening performances when it is evident they
are prepared to perform in concert.
Piano Studies
LUZERNE
has one of the
most successful summer piano programs
as developed by Toby Blumenthal. KAWAI AMERICA
CORPORATION provides 18 new pianos for practice
and performance every year.
Luzerne's piano program is geared to individual needs
with emphasis on sight reading, accompanying, solo and
chamber music repertoire. Pianists receive two half
hour lessons per week plus daily coaching in chamber music
and/or piano ensemble, i.e. four hand and duo piano, as
well as theory and ear training.

Numerous performance
opportunities occur for solo repertoire in master classes,
Sunday recitals and in chamber groups on Saturday
evenings. Pianists often perform as a part of the
orchestra and in the percussion section if needed. They
may also take jazz piano lessons and participate in jazz
ensembles if qualified.
String Program
In addition to String Orchestra, members of the string
faculty prepare selected students on solo repertoire
for performance in master classes and student
recitals. A visiting string instrument maker presents
a session on the history of string instruments with
suggestions for proper care and maintenance of
instruments.

Student string majors are given
two
one-half hour lessons per week,
participate in weekly string
sectionals, master classes, as
well as string pedagogy classes.
Woodwind Program
Flutist Leanne Wistrom
coordinates an intensive schedule for flute, clarinet,
oboe and bassoon players together with other wind
teachers.
Luzerne's woodwind program includes
preparation for master classes and solo performances.
Instruction on reed making is offered by the oboe and
bassoon teachers at extra cost. A flute choir is
formed if enrollment permits.
Brass Program
Tyrone Brueninger,
former Associate Principal Trombone, Philadelphia
Orchestra, pictured below coaching the 2007 Senior
Session Brass Ensemble, coordinates brass instruction for trumpet,
horn, trombone and tuba players.
Brass educators and performers Anthony McFarlane and
Cary Cobb also prepare Luzerne's Junior and Senior
Session students for participation in performances and master
classes with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Percussion
Luzerne's percussion program
includes private instruction and participation in
percussion ensembles, Brass Choir and Orchestra.

During the senior session
percussion majors have the opportunity to participate
in Master Classes with principal players of the
Philadelphia Orchestra.
Jazz Studies
Students of piano and other instruments attend
performance sessions and classes in basic
improvisational techniques presented by
John Nazarenko, jazz
pianist, guitarist and member of the Skidmore College
faculty and Anthony McFarlane, jazz musician, composer
and doctoral candidate at Miami University.
Theory & Composition
Theory classes are offered as an elective for
instrumentalists and are required for all pianists.
Private composition lessons, may be arranged at extra
cost with resident composer.
Conducting
Maestros Louis
Scaglioni and Andrew Kurtz instruct a limited number
of students in basic score reading, baton and
rehearsal techniques, while Maestro Luis Biava teaches
Senior Session Master Conducting Classes.

Proficient students are given the
opportunity to conduct a portion of an orchestra
rehearsal. During Senior Session students will observe
a rehearsal of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Master Classes
Resident artist faculty, visiting artists, and members
of the Philadelphia Orchestra come to the camp to
present master classes. Student Chamber groups and
solo performers are selected by the resident directors
to perform at master classes on the basis of their
readiness for the experience.
Vocal Studies
Theresa Treadway Lloyd and Janelle
McCoy have designed a program of studies for
instrumentalists who are interested in developing
their voices. Vocal repertoire is chosen according to
each individual's abilities with concentration on
diction and stage presence. Voice lessons are offered
during both sessions. In addition, Ms. McCoy often
organizes a chorus during Junior Session.
