Faculty Friday with Mary Kerr
Happy Faculty Friday, everyone! Each Friday we will feature one of our many amazing faculty members at Luzerne Music Center. We asked all of our instructors to tell us a little bit about themselves, and to share their favorite things about LMC.
Let us introduce you to LMC's flute instructor, Mary Kerr. We are so excited to have Mary join us for the second summer in row.
Share with us some of your professional accomplishments.
Winner of Alexander and Buono 2012 International Flute competition and solo debut at Carnegie Hall; Performed with NOVUS New York and performed in the debut recording of Elena Ruehr's "Cricket Spider Bee" with the Trinity Wall Street Choir; performed principal flute with Novus New York, the South Florida Symphony, and Texas Festival Orchestra; Performed in Spoleto USA, AIMS in Graz, Austria, National Repertory Orchestra, Round Top, Yale at Norfolk, and Bowdoin music festivals; performed under the Batons of Bernard Haitink, Robert Spano, Carl St. Clair, Harold Nelson, and Phillippe Entremont; Featured Guest Artist in 2013 Southwest Flute Festival and at Texas A&M Commerce Masterclass Series; DMA from Stony Brook University in 2013
What excites you about Luzerne Music Center?
It's exciting to see young professionals and future classical music patrons develop and LMC is a wonderful place to nurture that curiosity. At LMC, students have the unique opportunity so be surrounded by music in a way that they don't necessarily get to experience in their normal life. It's inspiring to see the students progress in such a short amount of time while at LMC because only young musicians can take such tremendous growth in such a short amount of time!
What can campers expect to learn while working with you this summer?
While studying with me at LMC, flutist will work on an array of technical exercises, warm ups, and etudes individually tailored to each student to enhance his/her development as a musician. Along with this, students will have the unique opportunity to learn about how to play flute in an ensemble both chamber and orchestral, and learn the role of the flute in these ensembles. Playing in a ensemble is fundamental to being a musician so things such as intonation, sound production, and blend will be of the utmost importance in lessons, sectionals, and rehearsals. We will also go over individual solo work in preparation for solo showcases and concerto competitions. In a nut shell, all aspects of flute playing (fundamentals, chamber, orchestral, and solo) will be worked on in lessons.
